2026 Festival Dedication

We are pleased to dedicate the 38th Annual Stark County Italian American Festival to Ted Swaldo

Ted Swaldo’s life is a testament to entrepreneurship, community leadership, and a deep appreciation for his Italian heritage. The son of Eugene Joseph Swaldo and Rosa Maria Gervasi, Ted’s roots trace back to Denno in Trento, Italy, where his mother was born before immigrating to America in 1905.

A native of Tuscarawas County and one of ten children, Ted built his foundation on hard work and determination. He graduated with honors from Tri State College with a degree in Mechanical Engineering while completing a co-op with The Timken Company, an early indication of the innovation and drive that would define his career.

Ted went on to co-found ASC Industries, which grew into the largest automotive water pump manufacturer in the world, with global operations spanning Spain, Mexico, and China, and headquarters in Green, Ohio. After selling the company in 2007, Ted briefly retired but, his passion for building and creating quickly called him back.

Just 27 days later, he was introduced to a 55-acre property that would become Gervasi Vineyard. In less than a year, Ted and his family transformed a neglected tree farm into one of Ohio’s premier winery resorts. Today, the estate features a remarkable collection of venues including three distinct restaurants, a coffeehouse and cocktail lounge, an intimate wine bar, luxurious overnight accommodations, unique event and wedding venues, a boutique gift shop, a spa, along with offsite concepts The Twisted Olive and OLINDA, a restaurant honoring his wife, Linda.

Ted’s commitment to community is equally impressive. He is a former member of the North Canton Jaycees and Rotary, and a recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. His impact spans decades with the Bluecoats Drum & Bugle Corps, where he served over 40 years, including as Executive Director and also held the role of Chairman of Drum Corps International.

His civic involvement includes service with the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival Committee, advisory roles with the University of Mount Union, and board leadership at Walsh University. In 2017, Ted co-chaired the Stark County United Way Campaign with his son Scott and played a key role in fundraising for Centennial Plaza, commemorating the NFL’s 100th anniversary. Most recently, he led the development of an Education Center for EN-RICH-MENT, supporting inner-city youth.

At the heart of it all is family. Ted has been married to his high school sweetheart, Linda Meese, for 63 years. Together, they have built a legacy that includes their children, Scott Swaldo and Christi Blackerby, their sons-in-law Tom Blackerby and Jeff Hicks, and their grandchildren Austin, Lucas, and Sophia.
