Bocce

Ciao!

It’s hard to believe, but the 2019 Italian American Festival and Bocce Ball Tournament is right around the corner and now is the time to register your teams!

Festival Dates are: Thursday, June 13th, Friday, June 14th and Saturday, June 15th

The Capuano and DeSarro families are excited to once again run the tournament, which is sponsored again by Papa Bears Italian Restaurant and Pizza Oven!

This year, the Festival and the tournament will be held at Weis Park which is located at 2600 Harvard Ave NW, Canton, OH 44709, which is right next to Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church on Harvard.

We are also pleased to announce that the tournament will be played on 4 professional grade Weiss Park courts that are completely under roof so, rain or shine, we will be able to play uninterrupted! And, with 4 courts to play on, we can accommodate up to 50-60 Men and Women teams! As we have done so in the past, we will present trophies for Men and Women 1st and 2nd place teams, donated by Stahlheber’s in Perry Township.

NEW THIS YEAR – we are introducing a TEEN BOCCE TOURNAMENT for boys and girls 13-18, which can be mixed teams or not. We need to get our young people interested in carrying on the tradition of the Festival and think that having fun playing Bocce Ball is a great way for them to get involved! We have not yet determined what the 1st and 2nd place prized will be, but we anticipate they most likely will be trophies or perhaps gift cards; TBD. We can take up to 12 Teen Teams.

Again this year, there will be a $20 entry fee for Men and Women only which is a donation to the Scholarship Fund of the Unique Club of Stark County. Teens play for free!

Tournament times:

For Men and Women – Maximum 50-60 teams:

Thursday: 6-10

Friday 6-11

Saturday Noon – 11

For Teens – Maximum 12 Teams:

Saturday Noon – 11

Miscellaneous:

  • Because we have 4 courts to work with, Men and Women teams will be scheduled to play Thursday-Saturday, whereas in the past we scheduled them on different days. This is subject to change depending upon the number of teams are registered.
  • As always, we will try and accommodate your schedule and play date preferences as best we can, but cannot guarantee any specific requests depending upon the number of teams we reserve and how the brackets work out. If you have special dates/times that you would like to request, please let me know.
  • Adult play will be limited to 14 point matches
  • Teen play will be limited to 11 point matches, although the Championship may play to 14, time permitting
  • Entry fee donation checks should be made out to the Unique Club and mailed to: Mark Capuano, 310 22nd St NW, Canton, OH, 44709

New Location means new and improved courts!

One of the many benefits of our new location is the utilization of the permanent bocce courts at Weis Park that host weekly leagues throughout the Summer months.  We will now feature (4) regulation size courts that are under roof and have ample lighting.

Papa Bear's Bocce Tournament

Bocce (lawn bowling) is one of the most popular Italian games.  The Papa Bear's Italian Festival Bocce Tournament is a tradition that continues at our new downtown location.  Tournament play begins on Thursday and concludes with the championship game on Saturday evening.
